[ he stops midsentence ast that unmistakable sound of branches breaking, pausing for a moment before standing up right to scan their surroundings. the forest has fallen into an eerie silence, making the other sounds such as a nearby brook flowing, and birds twittering in the distance all the more pronounced.
and of course, the sound of hunters being hunted. but he's not about to end up becoming either one of them. he's an innocent paleblood, after all. ]
Well, whatever it is, we don't have the luxury to find out right now. [ not when his companion is injured. he summons his broom with a wave of his hand and hops on, making some space for lumine at the back. ] Let's hurry.
[ lumine didn't catch his last remark, her attention elsewhere and distracted by the noise they both heard that seems to echo all around them. strange, how everything suddenly seems so ... quiet. there are no birds chirping or insects buzzing around them, like every other sound has been muffled saved for the crackling sound of branches breaking.
but even before she can react how she normally would, her momentary trance is broken by figaro's voice and she turns back to her companion, words of warning on the tip of her tongue. she too is paleblood, but it doesn—
only to blink in surprise and confusion at his form of transportation. hold on, give her a second to digest this, please. ]
... Is it safe? With the both of us on it, I mean?
[ it's not that she doubts him because he's proven so far that his sugar magic is quite effective, and she appreciates it very much. but, and please hear her out, this is her first time riding a magic broom. ]
Hm? [ the guy can't help but smile at the query. ] It should be safer than whatever's going on around us right now. The question is whether you're willing to take that risk.
[ except nah, she'd probably take up his offer anyway. after their little game of hopscotch, anything is possible.
but she'd better decide now -- the rustling of the trees and grass start up once more, and a guttural growl announces the arrival of some monstrous beasts in search of prey. and these two might be next.
not because it's creepy or anything of the sort, not at all, but because it's a little out of place given their current circumstances. on a normal day where there are no strange creatures seemingly roaming the forest, she might have offered him to walk with her instead. she likes walking, sue her.
but as it stands, he's probably right. what's the worst that could happen to her other than break a limb or two if she fell, anyway? injuries like that can be healed by a minister; death by mutilation or being eaten or whatever is a little more complicated.
lumine glances over her shoulder for a moment, shuddering at the growl that echoes a little closer to them, before she follows suit and hops onto the broom, gripping the handle tightly with her good hand. ]
[ a stroll sounds good! gotta stretch those legs and all. but this is hardly the time and place for it, and they've got to survive this ordeal first before making any plans like that...
so he huffs a sigh a relief when lumine takes up his offer, and with a nod of his head they nyoom off into the wilderness. some of the undead animals perk up in attention and start following them in hot pursuit, curious about this oddity zooming past.
how annoying. looks like it's time to bring out his omen, a hawk, to distract the beasts coming after them. when figaro speaks once more it's in a loud voice, the wind whipping at their ears. ]
[ her own omen decides to join the fray as well, her tiny cat jumping off of her shoulder to hiss and scratch at the undead creatures ambling after them. probably useless, but it's just as frazzled as all of them in their current circumstances. lumine calls it back and it disappears into a wisp of smoke, reappearing on her shoulder once more.
she looks up at the back of his head when she finally hears his question, carried over to her by the rushing wind. ]
Yes, don't worry about me. [ she's fine, even if she's gripping the handle of the broom, her knuckles white, while cradling her injured arm. ] But you should probably look in front of you.
[ sugar doctor, that's a huge tree they're running up to in a bit. they should probably do something, right? right? ]
[ that's a good enough distraction, at least! these omens sure are handy in a pinch.
but saying that he shouldn't worry about her is going to make him more concerned, you know? but a huge tree in the middle of their path should be a matter of concern too, huh. not to fret, though -- figaro turns his attention in front of him just in time and he steers the broomstick upwards along the treetrunk, expertly dodging branches along the way before zooming back to their original path.
a sigh of relief. hopefully that should be enough to shake them off. with that out of the way, he presses on until they reach crenshaw's residential area, finally landing in front of a townhouse with a tiny yard in front of it, sticking out of a row of houses that don't usually have them.
home sweet home, the doctor is in. just going to lead lumine to his clinic, still sparsely decorated, but he has the essentials all set up such as an operating table and a medicine cabinet full of blood vials and medicinal herbs. ]
All right, sit here. [ pats said table. ] I'm just going to treat your shoulder the old-fashioned way, so I apologize if you're expecting something more... colorful.
[ sir, she thought you would, you know, swerve to the left or right ... not upward ...
but the clearing of the woods and the fading of the growling behind them send a shot of much-needed relief through her system, even more so the familiar sight of one of the districts. for a moment, there's a temptation to ask him to simply drop her off at her home (also in crenshaw, will you look at that) but she doesn't know if he'll accept that as a doctor, especially with her shoulder still a mess.
in any case, she lets out a sigh of relief she didn't think she was holding when she finally lands back on her feet, ambling after him inside his clinic. ]
No, it's fine ...
[ while magic is certainly more efficient when it comes to healing, there's nothing wrong with fixing injuries with medical techniques the way normal doctors do. it's a little more agonising, but what's another dose of pain?
she climbs onto the table, her arm still cradled against her. ]
The Ministers didn't exactly use colourful spells, either, when they treated my injuries in the past couple of weeks.
[ but it worked in the end, didn't it? doesn't matter how you go about your way so long as you arrive at the same destination. ]
Ah, I figured. Most of the Ministers I've seen so far don't use magic outside of their blood abilities. But I can at least assure you that this time won't be too painful.
[ it's only the matter of carefully rolling up lumine's affected sleeve and giving the hurt shoulder a couple of firm, tentative touches. luckily it doesn't seem to need surgery and all that, so all he needs to do is pop the shoulder back into place.
the catalyst-like magical artifact of his manifests in his free hand once more. ]
Possideo.
[ the throbbing ache in lumine's shoulder seems to subside significantly -- as if local anesthesia has been applied -- as he magically forces the arm bone back into the socket. there we go! didn't take too long, did it? he really could've healed her back there if it weren't for the cat-and-mouse atmosphere. ]
There. You're going to need a sling for a few days though, but I figure that our blood will speed up the healing process anyway. [ just going to fashion one out of sturdy fabric and bandages with magic in the meantime -- there's only so much he can use while his business has barely started, after all. ] Just take a good night's sleep and you'll be as good as new, albeit with a sore shoulder. Apply ice if it's getting uncomfortable anyway, and continue consuming the sugar I gave you.
[ he then steps back to offer her a relieved smile. ]
[ she still preferred the less vomit-inducing path ...
lumine winces, biting her lower lip to keep herself from crying out, when she feels the press of his fingers against her shoulder, pain radiating from pretty much every inch of that side of her body. the adrenaline earlier had momentarily numbed the pain, kept her from thinking on it too much while they're busy trying to escape their pursuers.
but the pain slowly dissipates when he summons his magic again, her shoulder only feeling sore when he finally puts it back into place. aah, but a sling for a few days ... it seems she'll have to cancel her sparring match, then. ]
Sleep, ice, and sugar. Easy enough to remember.
[ it's putting it in practice that will make it just a bit challenging for her, but she doesn't say that out loud in front of the doctor. just in case he fusses, you know. ]
What about you? [ she winces again when she reflexively tries to roll her shoulder. she'll have to stop doing that for a while. ] Are you okay? No injuries, I hope?
[ lumine gives him a quick once-over, looking a little undecided on his supposed clean bill of health, before she lets it go. he's a doctor, so he probably knows himself better than anyone else—and can treat himself better than anyone else, too. if he says he's fine, then she'll have to trust him that he's telling her the truth in some way.
... even if he can probably hide it from her because (1)he's a magical doctor and (2)they're not the closest of friends. barely acquaintances, even. ]
Oh? [ she looks surprised at his offer as she hops off the table, wincing again when she unconsciously moved her arm to balance herself. ] Well ... Wouldn't it be a waste of magic if I live just nearby?
[ like around crenshaw too, doctor. is he worried that she'll get attacked again? ]
[ well, you know. better keep their relationship a professional one. but there really is nothing wrong with figaro at the moment, so at least there's that.
he blinks. ]
Eh? You're from around here? Well, in that case, please take care on your way home.
[ although... he is kind of tired too, from their little adventure. gonna have to take a bit of rest after she's gone. ]
[ she lets out a chuckle at that, shaking her head. ]
I actually wanted you to drop me off earlier at my home rather than here, but ...
[ he'd fuss. that's the biggest issue that she had wanted to avoid as someone who would only seek medical attention when her injuries are pretty bad. in any case, she gives him another smile as she walks towards the door of his clinic. ]
Thank you for helping me out. I really appreciate it. [ she pauses for a bit just before she steps out, her brows furrowing. she's forgetting something ... oh. ] ... I'll send the payment over for the treatment. Thanks again!
